Living trend 2021 - Japandi!

‘Everything in life… has to have balance’

– Donna Karan, designer

Japanese aesthetics and Scandinavian design: Mix'em well and you get a very cool home trend with a unique take on what you might call minimalism.

Whereas in Japan people look for the beauty in imperfection, in the far north 'hygge' is central. A new kind of minimalism emerges that perfectly combines cosiness and comfort with elegant zen.

The simplicity of sleek, straight lines in a somewhat darker colour palette with the functionality and general lightness of Scandinavian-style interiors form the basis of Japandi. In this style, you choose a few statement pieces, rather than lots of decoration. Lighting can play an important role here: either in creating tranquillity and harmony, or as a real eye-catcher!

Colours

Basis: colours & materials

One of the main characteristics of the Japandi style is the use of pure, natural and durable materials. Wood and concrete predominate. Combinations of the light blond woods from Scandinavia and the warm deep woods that characterise Japan make for an interesting mix. Rustic terracotta and even bamboo or rattan can be the perfect additions.

The colours are also based on a calm, natural palette. Think especially of sand and earth tones, neutral greys and a warm white to tie everything together. Japandi, on the other hand, also means contrast. So make sure you have colourful details in rich, deep colours such as terracotta, aubergine, soft rose and emerald green, indigo and even black.

Rule no. 1... clean lines dominate

Parallelism, lines that run perfectly side by side or intersect at the perfect angle. This Japanese line pattern is combined with rounded, organic shapes and soft, warm materials.  Frequently, low furniture pieces are used that complement each other and create and break lines.

Both styles are characterised by simplicity. Beauty lies in this simplicity. This is reflected in the furniture's rather practical design. Clean lines, comfortable. Sleek. Simple.

It’s all-in the details

Just because this style doesn't like frills doesn't mean you shouldn't decorate. It does mean, however, that you cannot go over the top. Think carefully about each piece you add to your interior. Pick out things that are valuable and sustainable. Don't get lost in trend-sensitive details that you'll get tired of after a few months.

This also applies to your choice of lighting. Every interior has room for an eye-catcher and a hanging lamp or floor lamp are the perfect choice to make a design statement.

In a nutshell... Remember: peace, balance, minimalism, nature, authenticity, clean lines, organic shapes and contrast.

Minimalist? Yes. Boring? No way! 😉
